Ed Sheeran – Small Bump

I just recently discovered the song “Small Bump” by Ed Sheeran, and it definitely made me feel a rush of emotions from happiness because a father is expecting his first child, and then this emotion is suddenly devastated when he loses his child. ” ‘Cause you were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life. Maybe you were needed up there but we’re still unaware as why.” These words just tear me apart inside. It is such a tragic story.

In the “Songs of Sundrie Natures” we had a discussion about the specific musical manuscript of the tale of Susanna Fayre. We came to the conclusion that when their is a soloist singing the words of the song that it insinuates the idea that these lyrics tell a personal story. In this Sheeran’s “Small Bump,” he is indeed telling a story about how he is awaiting the arrival of his unborn child, and then his hopes and dreams are crushed when he loses her.

I know this may be irrelevant to this course, but I feel as if the combination of the words and music were more emphasized when put into the context of the video. We see a man, Ed Sheeran, impatiently waiting in a hospital to hear the news of his child. As the man is sitting, it is almost as if the people around him are just a blur that fade in and out. We see the women sitting in back of him, the old woman in the wheelchair, the apparently intoxicate man, as well as the mother chasing after her children. He is so focused in his thoughts and concerned about his child that he is not aware of his surroundings.

While listening to the lyrics and watching the music video, I almost wondered if Sheeran wrote this song because this is a topic he is passionate about, or even further, if he went through this experience himself. He puts so much passion into these lyrics that is almost impossible to think otherwise.

I am going to post the lyrics because I think is important to evaluate how watching the music video and reading the lyrics alone differ, as well as what kind of emotions the music video adds to the actual song.

[Verse 1:]
You’re just a small bump unborn, in four months you’re brought to life,
You might be left with my hair, but you’ll have your mother’s eyes,
I’ll hold your body in my hands, be as gentle as I can,
But for now you’re scan of my unmade plans,
[album version:] A small bump in four months you’re brought to life
[acoustic version:] A small bump in four months you’ll open your eyes

[Pre-Chorus:]
[album version:] I’ll whisper quietly, I’ll give you nothing but truth,
[acoustic version:] I’ll hold you tightly, I’ll give you nothing but truth,
If you’re not inside me, I’ll put my future in you

[Chorus:]
You are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
Oh, you are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
And you’ll be alright.

[Verse 2:]
Oh, you’re just a small bump unknown, you’ll grow into your skin.
With a smile like hers and a dimple beneath your chin.
Finger nails the size of a half grain of rice,
And eyelids closed to be soon opened wide
A small bump, in four months you’ll open your eyes.

[Pre-Chorus:]
[album version:] And I’ll hold you tightly, I’ll tell you nothing but truth,
[acoustic version:] And I’ll hold you tightly, I’ll give you nothing but truth,
If you’re not inside me, I’ll put my future in you

[Chorus:]
You are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
Oh, you are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
And you’ll be alright.

[Bridge:]
And you can lie with me,
With your tiny feet
When you’re half asleep,
I’ll leave you be.
Right in front of me
For a couple weeks
So I can keep you safe.

[Chorus:]
‘Cause you are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
You are my one and only.
You can wrap your fingers round my thumb and hold me tight.
And you’ll be alright.

[Verse 4:]
‘Cause you were just a small bump unborn for four months then torn from life.
Maybe you were needed up there but we’re still unaware as why.
