All of Me by John Legend

This song written and performed by John Legend reminded me of the poems we read by Sir Philip Sidney. Sidney’s collection of poems written to his love “Stella” are a swirl of emotions. A lot of the poems deal with the tortuous pleasure of love. Sidney’s poems often describe overwhelming feelings of sadness and pain – but it is the pain that he revels in because he loves her so much.

John Legend’s song is similar because he sings “My head is under water but I’m feeling fine.” Just as Sidney was overwhelmed by love and in over his head, Legend is embracing the powerful emotions love can bring.

Sidney also talks about how Stella is his muse and inspiration. John Legend also talks about his lover in a similar manner: “You’re my downfall, you’re my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues.”

Similar to Sidney’s poems, this song describes the woman of his affections as perfect. He loves everything about her.

I also found the song related to Sidney’s poems because in many of the poems Sidney wishes he could read Stella and know what she was thinking and fully understand her. In this song, John Legend also wishes he knew what was going on in the object of his affection’s mind: “Got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind?
I’m on your magical mystery ride.”

Overall I thought that the song related to quite a few themes that we saw in Sidney’s poems. Except for the MAJOR difference that Stella wasn’t giving Astrophil/Sidney “all of her” – in spite of him baring his soul and giving all of himself.

Here are the full lyrics to the song:

[Verse 1:]
What would I do without your smart mouth
Drawing me in, and you kicking me out
Got my head spinning, no kidding, I can’t pin you down
What’s going on in that beautiful mind
I’m on your magical mystery ride
And I’m so dizzy, don’t know what hit me, but I’ll be alright

[Bridge:]
My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

[Chorus:]
‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all, all of me
And you give me all, all of you, oh

[Verse 2:]
How many times do I have to tell you
Even when you’re crying you’re beautiful too
The world is beating you down, I’m around through every mood
You’re my downfall, you’re my muse
My worst distraction, my rhythm and blues
I can’t stop singing, it’s ringing, in my head for you

[Bridge:]
My head’s under water
But I’m breathing fine
You’re crazy and I’m out of my mind

[Chorus:]
‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all, all of you, oh

Give me all of you
Cards on the table, we’re both showing hearts
Risking it all, though it’s hard

[Chorus:]
‘Cause all of me
Loves all of you
Love your curves and all your edges
All your perfect imperfections
Give your all to me
I’ll give my all to you
You’re my end and my beginning
Even when I lose I’m winning
‘Cause I give you all of me
And you give me all of you

I give you all, all of me
And you give me all, all of you, oh
