Christina Aguilera’s “Your Body”

John Day’s The Isle Of Gulls has a lot of sexual lines in it, and a major theme in the play is maiden’s losing their “maidenheads.” In Act 3 Scene 2, Violetta talks about a “sexy dream” that she had one night. From that, we decided that women are sexual too, not just men.

That women are sexual beings is no secret today. I could name several songs about women singing openly about sex — “S&M” by Rihanna and “I’m A Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears. However, I think another concept has formed about women and sex: Women are more emotional about sex and the person they are having sex with. They are not like men, who can sleep with anyone without feeling attached. Women latch on to the people they have sex with, and I believe, there is valid research about this. But don’t quote me.

When listening to Christina Aguilera’s “Your Body,” I think that this concept is reversed.

“I came here tonight to get you out of my mind,
I’m gonna take what I find (uh oh, yeah!)
So open the box, don’t need no key I’m unlocked
And I won’t tell you to stop (uh oh, yeah!).”

The first two lines tell a story of a girl who wants to get over another guy and will sleep with anyone else to get that person off her mind. It doesn’t matter who it is. This reminds me of the final scene in The Isle of Gulls, when Hippolita says that she’d give her virginity to anyone, even if she doesn’t love them, rather than have her virginity taken by force by another. The last two lines of this verse just emphasize Aguilera’s willingness to have sex.

“Hey boy!
I don’t need to know where you’ve been,
All I need to know is you and no need for talking
Hey boy!
So don’t even tell me your name,
All I need to know is whose place,
And let’s get walking.”

She doesn’t need to know his name. She doesn’t need to have a conversation with him. She just wasnts to know the place where they’re going to get busy.

I would say that this song shows a different perspective to the original concept that women cannot have sex with a person without caring about them. Aguilera shows that women can also be in it only for the physical pleasure. Aguilera makes this point clear just as Violetta makes the it clear that women are sexual as well as men.
